December 2008 in Review
46 hr massage with 2 new clients
13 visits to this website
Well I can’t believe we’re pretty much 1/2 way though January and I’m only now finding time to blog about December 2008!
Well with 6 days off in the month I’m pretty happy with the amount of work I did. A bit concerned with the number of new clients that are coming in each month, but I have plans to improve that.
As you can see I started the month off by working on my business plan. It feels good to actually have a plan of action in writing. Gives me a sense or direction and something to aim for. At the same time, it’s a bit frightening to think that I now have ‘targets’ that I need to meet. When you think about it I always did – I at least needed to make enough to pay my bills and put food on the table, but now I’ve actually ‘documented’ those goals and it actually feels good.
The Economic Development Unit of my local council offers free assistance in writing your business plan so I have arranged to meet with them in January. Hopefully they will be able to give me some ideas and perhaps ever hook me up with people and/or organizations that will be helpful.
I caught up with one of the other members from the Springboard group at the networking breakfast ‘Surviving Tough Times’ but figured that this network is not for me as their focus is on export and now matter how you look at it, I just can export my fantastic massages!
Socially the Christmas celebrations were lots of fun. I really appreciate the suggestions my Massage Mentoring group gave about my business plan. One of my clients invited me to his 60th birthday lunch. It was great to see the ‘toys’ he talks about and meet some of the people he mentions. However, I didn’t spend the rest of my spare time at the gym as planned. Guess that’s why we get to make New Year’s resolutions!
The days at horsey friends block were heaps of fun. We decided to go for a drive to South Australia – just so we could say we went interstate for the holidays! Ended up at Naracoorte Caves which was just amazing! The rest of our time was spent relaxing and riding Blitzen for about 15 minutes each. I can not believe how sore my legs were for the next 3 days! Need to do some serious work on my inner thighs!
The working bee at The Druid’s has been postponed until further notice.
I had another call from the Adult Community Education Centre that I thought was rather interesting. The lady worked as a massage therapist before she broke both her arms in a push bike accident. She asked if I would be interested in trading massages but first she wanted to meet me to see if I ‘suited’ her! Always up for a challenge I met her at a café in town and had to ask why she when about things this way. When I am looking for a therapist to trade with I pay for my first massage and go from there. Each to their own I guess. From my perspective, now that we have traded I will let her contact me to organise another trade.
New Year’s Eve was spent on the dance floor of a pub in Wallan. Yes, I was dancing and having an absolute ball. Even horsey friend got up for a boogie which doesn’t happen very often! Rather soggy the next day but it was a great night!
So that’s me in a nutshell. As always, feel free to leave any comments or suggestions.

Well in a fit of inspiration, I'm 3/4 of the way through writing my Business Plan!
When reading it again today, several 'action steps' became obvious to me, the first of which was getting the word out about what I want to achieve. What better place to plant the first seed but this blog!? So without further ado here is my Vision.
Our mission is to operate a profitable natural health centre within the Shire that offers Complimentary Health Services such as:
Massage
Osteopathic /Chiropractic / physiotherapy
Chinese/Auredic medicine (eg: acupuncture, natropath, herbalist etc)
Occupational Therapist to help clients:
• in improve quality of life,
• increase productivity,
• learn new skills,
• return to previously valued activities and engage in personal development
Classes in NLP, EFT, crystal healing, meditation, overcoming additions, yoga, Pilates, Tia Chi etc
Café serving healthy foods
The centre will be well regarded as a place of health and well being to which ‘traditional medical practitioners’ (such as medical doctors, physiologists, etc) refer their clients for assistance.
The business would either be a co-op or each practitioner would own their own business and rent a room or space within the building. There will be a Receptionist/Office Administrator to oversee the general running of the Centre and the practitioners would meet on a regular basis to:
• discuss the progress of mutual clients
• offer suggestions to provide the best service for each client (without the fear of ‘stealing’ each others client)
• Marketing opportunities including input to the monthly newsletter
• Support each others growth and learning
Our goal is to assist all clients to be free from dis-ease, pain and/or discomfort as quickly and efficiently as possible using the most effective available resources to give the body what it needs to heal itself.
To achieve this goal, treatments are by tailored based on initial interview information, as well as in-the-minute feedback during the treatment to insure the client's comfort and satisfaction. Staff also maintain leading edge training in the industry and continually improve the excellence of their techniques through involvement in Associations and communication with clients and peers.
We offer treatments that are effective, yet respectful of the client's personal boundaries, so that the experience is relaxing and energizing for both the client and the therapist. We are mindful of the overall experience and use quality products where required.
All practitioners are accredited with the appropriate regulating authority, WorkCover Accredited where applicable and may qualify for health fund rebates with some Private Health Funds.
We believe wholeheartedly in the healing power and positive changes , can make in the lives of our clients. We love being able to assist others to improve their overall wellbeing in body, mind, and spirit and enjoy inspiring others to go after their dreams and goals with complete trust and confidence.
If you would like to help create this vision, feel free to drop me a line.
November in Review
46.5 hours massage with 4 new clients
November was a slightly quieter month than October. We could hypothosize as to why this is but at the end of the day it was good to have a bit of a breather and enjoy 5 days off during the month. One of my days off was spent indulging in a Pamper Cruise along the Yarra. The 2.5 hr cruise included a 30 minute neck and shoulder massage, 30 minute hand and foot massage and a 10 minute tarot card reading along with a glass of champagne and nibbles. Just bliss with absolutely perfect weather to boot! Unfortunately, the only information I got from the tarot reading was ‘3’ – with absolutely no context!
My stall as part of Lifestyle Expo at the local Festival was lots of fun. Most people chose to take advantage of the $1 per minute seated massage instead of just a free 2 minute sample. It was a great opportunity to give out brochures and talk to people about the benefits of massage.
One of my new clients in November, was a direct result of the advert in the Adult Community Education Centre newsletter. I was advised this newsletter is delivered to every household in the Shire, so in my opinion this is a pretty poor response. The Centre is not sure what kind of advert they will be running for Term 1 2009 so we’ll see what happens.
The Springboard Business Development Program finished at the end of the month. It was great to get to know other small business owners and have a chance to discuss various issues. We have arranged to catch up again in six months time so see how we are all doing, but hopefully we’ll keep in touch during this time.
I also took advantage of the warmer weather and had a weekly swimming lesson at the local pool. I can now do stuff other than dog paddle and make it the entire length of the pool!! Just a word of advice – swimming goggles do not look cool!
I did a 3 hour make up course at the Adult Community Education Centre. In a fit of fitness, I rode my push bike the 6km to class which was fine as I had 1 hour to get there! Of course, class ran late so I only had 45 minutes to get back for a client. Man - those freeway overpasses are REALLY steep!! While I was struggling to breath, I thought of those groovy shorts Perth Friend has sent for my birthday/Xmas and wondered if they would have helped with walking the next day. Thankfully I was fine the next day. Does this mean, I’m fitter than I thought?! Oh - made it home with enough time for a quick but much needed wash before my client arrived!
Murray Marathon friend dropped around during the month. Some time ago his wife read our emails and made it very clear (to me at least!) that our friendship was inappropriate. Not one to come between husband and wife, I chose to have no further contact with him however, he would occasionally contact me, without his wife's knowledge, which would make me feel very awkward. While it was very nice to catch up with him again, I believe I have made it VERY clear not to contact me again unless he is comfortable with me letting his wife know. Hopefully, this has put the matter to rest.
Friends came over at the end of the month for a working bee. Finally got rid of a tree that was causing dramas with the gutters and got some general handy man jobs done around the house and garden. In December I’ll be helping one of those friends with some jobs at their place.
December has started with a fit of inspiration on my Business Plan. I have 2 dinners, 1 lunch and a networking breakfast called 'Surviving in Tough Times' organised for Christmas. Also going to Horsey Friends block for a few days to play with her Shetland Ponies. I'll be spending any other free time at the gym!
Hope you have yourself a very Merry Christmas and the New Years brings all that you could ask for. As always, feel free to leave any comments and suggestions

Water Recycling
http://ozito.com.au/productinfo.aspx?prodid=OZCWP12A
Great little cordless water pump that you can use to recycle water. So now I send my washing machine water into a 240l bin, pop the pump in the bin and water my garden.
Fantastic! And so much better for your back!

53 hours massage (woohoo!!) with 5 new clients
Well my data has been recovered – thank God! I have also bought my first Mac – wow what a learning curve! The month has been spent learning how to drive the Mac and sorting out all my data. I’ve kinda got the network set up so I can access documents and print from either computer, but still have to figure out a system so that my data is backed up automatically. Not an easy task, I can assure you! You gotta remember – I’m a massage therapist, not a computer technician!
The adverts I organized in August went to print this month, but as yet, no one has said they found me as a result of those adverts. I am attending the Springboard Business Development Program. This Program is an opportunity for home-based and small business to work on the development of their business. It’s a 6 week program and we have spent some time discussing various topics but I feel I have gotten the most benefit from our review of each other’s websites. I am also reading a book on how to grow your business with Google so no doubt there will be some changes. I am also looking how I can use html emails rather than snail mail to keep in touch with my clients.
Demand for seated massage is growing. In addition to the hours above, I had my first session at a nearby Centrelink office during the month and I am organizing sessions at other offices along with my regular session here in town. I also did 4 hours massage for a Mothers Network that have an annual get away for their members here in ‘the country’.
Daylight savings has started early this year and the weather has finally started to warm up. My garden is looking lovely, if I do say myself and I’m just loving the fact that my business is growing and I’m getting used to working for myself! I have started going to Aquarobics at the gym – how much fun is that!! You really get to have a good workout and you’re not sore the next day. I was so nervous about getting wet at the first class – I hadn’t been in any ‘body of water’ for ……. God 2 years or more! After lots tooing and frowing, I finally used the stairs rather than diving (read belly flop!) in and the water was soooo warm. The weather has been so nice, I have been able to go for a walk rather than being stuck indoors on a treadmill. I also bought a ‘doo hicky’ that converts your push bike in to an exercise bike – just gotta figure out how to set it up!
I have also become a mother again – Binx is now mine (as much as a cat can be)! His former ‘parent’ are moving and don’t want to take him with them (which is a discussion all of its own!) so I have adopted him. Of course, the first thing I did was get him desexed which I don’t think he is very happy about. I had just got to the stage where I could actually pat him but now he is giving me a wide birth – I’m sure he’s thinking ‘last time she touched me I lost a rather personal part – not going there again!’. I’m sure with lots of love (read food!) he will come around again. Tippy seems to be coping with the new addition and giving me a lot more love!
November starts of with the annual Festival in town. I was invited to hold a stall as part of the Lifestyle Expo (yes, ‘they’ contacted me!!) and when I looked at the floor plan, it seems I am located next to a clairvoyant which I found that rather amusing.
So that’s October in a nutshell. As always, feel free to leave any comments and suggestions.

September in Review

1 hour massages for The Druid
43 hours massage for me
Socially, I volunteered to work at Christopher Howards Break Through to Success Seminar for 4 days. I had a fantastic time and meet some really wonderful people. Having attended the seminar back in February it was interesting to see things from the other side. Back in February, I had a joke with my friends suggesting I would come back as crew and massage Chris Howard himself. You know what – I did! On the first day I was there I mentioned to my Team Leader that I am the worlds best massage therapist, so if Chris would like a massage, I would be available! Saturday morning, he comes charging up to me say ‘Come with me, you’re going to massage Chris.’ I had no oil and Chris had no time, so it ended up being about 15 minutes over his shirt but hey, I can now positively say Strategic Visioning does work!
I also celebrated my birthday by going bowling with friends (yes, there seems to be a theme happening here!). I learnt just how much of a control freak I really am – all I was told was to keep Saturday night free. By Wednesday, I texted everyone to asking what we were doing and if I needed to make any bookings. No one replied which sent me nuts! When everyone turned up on Saturday night, I suggested we go to Taco Bills after bowling. Not much interest there but there was a suggestion we head to Kyneton which didn’t thrill me much but I figured what the hell. As it turns out, dinner was organized up there with streamers, party poppers and other toys. I was so surprised when I walked in I almost burst in to tears! Thanks guys!
Checked out a plant show in Macendon which was interesting but expensive so came home and spent the day in the garden. Decided to chat with my neighbour to see if we could do something to stop their cat from stealing my boys food and spraying in my house. Dad and daughter were considering getting Binxy ‘fixed’, but when mum heard about it, she decided it would be better to put him down! In her opinion, castration is cruel as the animal doesn’t get a choice but putting him down is kinder?! Of course, this caused the daughter to throw a fit (as only teenagers can). I figured, it would be a good time to leave!
I have since contacted Council who tell me all I need to do it bring the cat to the Pound. The owners need to claim him within 7 days and they will not release him until he has been ‘fixed’, vaccinated and microchipped. If they refuse, he will be put down. When I drop him off, I can tell them that if he is not claimed, I will adopt him and then the previous owners do not have a claim (ie I have ‘legally’ adopted him). Hmmmm – while I don’t want Binxy to continue spraying , do I want another cat? When you think about it, my neighbours are simply saving themselves $200 by letting me take care of the problem for them – bastards! Binxy will continue roaming the neighbourhood once he’s ‘fixed’ but he just won’t smell as bad. Often times, I can smell him before I see him – this from a smoker who has no sense of smell! I can’t believe my non-smoking neighbours can tolerate him!
The last week end in September was spent in Perth to celebrate my niece’s engagement. It was good to catch up with my family and friends. Had a pleasant family dinner on Friday night. Spent Saturday afternoon with Sis and Mum making canapés for the party. Managed to smash a jar of olives on the floor and drop the eggshell but not the egg into the mixing bowl - we haven’t laughed so much in a long time! They both agree – I need to stay out of the kitchen!
I was very pleased to see that just us oldies smoked – seems the ‘Quit campaign’ is working. Brother cooked a lovely roast for lunch on Sunday which we enjoyed with Perth friend. They hadn’t seen her in many years and were delighted with how fit and healthy she looks and the sense of ‘joie de vie’ she carries with her. Seems I will be heading to Perth again in late March for the (already organized!) wedding.
From a business perspective I was disappointed to have to let The Druid go. Seems things are not working out for him on a personal level, so he needs to take some time to sort these things out. Once he has done that, we will review things again. I did however, pick up another 2 seated massage gigs at a couple of schools (which are not included in the hours above) and I think one will end up being every six weeks or so. I have placed an advert in the ACE centre’s newsletter for Term 4 so I know this will lead to more work.
So that’s September in a nutshell. As always, feel free to leave any comments and suggestions.

August in Review
50 visits to my massage business website
7 hours massages for The Druid
47 hours massage for me
Since I’m reviewing August at the end of September, things are obviously busy. But the great thing is I don’t feel like I’m running around with my head cut off or terribly stressed. Unfortunately, I can’t tell how many new clients I have from September, because my disk drive is with a PC doctor being fixed. I soooo hope he can recover all my data!
From a business perspective I have been contacting various sporting and hobby groups about advertising in their newsletters which resulted in about 4 or 5 adverts for either $0 or next to nothing. Very excited that the ACE centre will be running my advert in their newsletter for Term 4 which goes out to every household in the Shire. Got my tax done and I have been trying to figure out how to send a welcome email to clients rather than send them a letter via snail mail. Since I want the email to look a bit ‘special’, it is proving to be more difficult than I thought. If anyone out there knows anything about HTML, give me a hoy!
Socially, we had a combined birthday party for 4 of my friends (all born in August – apparently I have a thing about Leos). It was a fantastic night with sooooooo much food, great conversation and laughter over card games. We also attended a Trivia night at my squash club with was a bit of a hoot. We were the strongest table there, holding up all the other teams (work that one out)!
I finally made it to my first Spring Stitches class (its only taken 8 months!) A group of ladies meet twice a month and spend a couple of hours doing some kind of needle work and chatting. Great place to learn new things and get away from the house. I’ll be trying to work things out so I can get there more often.
Also had a chance to see two movies this month – Wanted with Angelina Jolie which I thought was an OK movie, but I wasn’t too impressed with her performance, and Taken with Liam Neeson. The movie was OK but I thought the ending was a bit weak. I could have waited for both movies to come out on DVD but now I don’t have to.
So that’s August in a nutshell. As always, feel free to leave any comments and suggestions.
